Konnichiwa...(to our Japanese penpals!)

Last week, we finally received our long awaited letters from Japan! When the envelope was delivered to class, I thought I had just won a million dollars. We opened and read the letters with our partners. We couldn't believe the neat handwriting and creative, artistic paper. Some of the students have already started making paper to write back and gathering artifacts to send.

As you think about what you want to write back to your penpal. Look at this website. One of the best things about having a penpal is that they can answer almost any question you have about their culture and country. Explore this website and post your comments. Here are some things to think about:
  • How is Japan similar to the United States?
  • How is Japan different than the United States?
  • What are some interesting facts that you learned about the country and culture?
  • What kinds of things were invented in Japan?
  • What do the Japanese do to help protect the environment?

You did a good job of using a simile when you said-
when I opened the envelope, I felt like I had just won a million dollars.

I looked at the website, and found some information. Some games that they play are: baseball and swimming. They also have the olimpic games. They invented mobile phones, "clean energy," and bowlingual. Bowlingual is when you have something that looks like a remote, and you can know what dogs say! Thats all for now!!

disasters. Also I learned that in Japan on March in the south you can sunbath, and in the north of Japan you can go skiing. Japan sounds like an awesome place to go to.

When Japan used steam trains they could only go 59 mph. Now the Japan's trains can go up to 344mph. The trip from Tokyo to Osaka took seven and a half hours with the old steanm trains now that same trip with the bullet train only takes about three hours.
That shows than Japan's technology improves very fast.

I learned that the bon festival is held to pray for the soul of ones ancestors. It is one of the biggest traditional events of the year. In it they send lanterns down rivers to pray to their relatives.
